about

With a lockdown in place and summer just around the corner, “Onterrible” couldn’t be arriving at a better time. From the second the band punches in, to the very last note, this new single from DINO’s forthcoming album Staycation commands the listener’s attention with relentless energy, impeccable musicianship and an unforgettable vocal performance by songwriter and frontman David White.

Drawing on influence from fellow Canadian artists such as Mother Mother, Protest The Hero and Danko Jones, “Onterrible” confirms that DINO’s truly original ‘Big Band Rock’ sound is a force to be reckoned with.

“Onterrible” is a commonly used slang term used to denounce Ontario, both playfully and seriously. While touring Western Canada on an acoustic tour back in 2018, White heard this term one time too many, and decided he wanted to write something in defence of his home province and its culture. The music video for “Onterrible” is an extension of this defence as it’s composed entirely of footage of Ontario that was captured and submitted to DINO by their fans and followers.

It’s been a long and difficult year for Ontarians: losing loved ones to the pandemic, weaving in and out of stay at home orders, and divided by the actions and decisions of politicians and world leaders… “Onterrible” gives Ontario a reason to reunite. The song reminds Ontarians of our ability to turn a negative into a positive, and to celebrate when we overcome obstacles. The music video and song showcases a vibrant past, and gives viewers a new hope when looking forward into the future.

lyrics

Build it up or tear it down
That doesn't make it common ground

We're just trying to level out

The landscape but for who
If you're so proud of everything that you've been up to?

You know it's not about that

People or the places that you mess with each night
Why you keep coming at us if you're so satisfied?

I think that we got it made and don't care if you understand
All the things we've sacrificed to master how we thrive on what we've
Always had within our hearts but never quite inside our hands
And I've been called a lot of things but honest to god, they're not all that bad

Aw, you poor sap
What's so "Onterrible" about that?

So let it go or reel it in
You'll never catch that one again

There's always been a bigger one

And who couldn't use more rest?
It's never been a contest

If it was we all know who'd win

All the people and the places messed with each night
Why you keep coming at us
If you're so happy and satisfied
With everything that you think we lack?

Cuz I don't think it's all that bad
Aw, you poor sap
What's so "Onterrible" about that?
Yeah

It's not the best
But it's a lot of things you won't find in the west

Not so "Onterrible"
Not so bad
